When it comes to orthotics, we can be trusted to create a device that’s as unique as you. Meticulous in our approach and passionate in our delivery, our highly experienced team excel in creating orthoses that focus on design and application.

What are Orthotics?

The term orthotics covers a huge range of different medical devices that can be used on any part of the body and can include a simple shoe raise or basic stock insole, a full leg brace or splint, spinal jackets or corsets, hand or wrist splints, elbow and shoulder supports, neck braces and protective helmets.

Simply put, orthotic devices are scaffolding for the body that can be designed to correct poor alignment, give some energy return while walking, provide cushioning and support, or offer protection of a vulnerable body part or area.

Orthotic devices can be purchased ‘off the shelf’ or custom-made depending on your individual needs. We are experienced in fitting products from the world’s leading suppliers, including Fior & Gentz, OttoBock, Ossur and Blatchford.

Why use orthotics?

Orthotic intervention is an important part of a multi-disciplinary approach to rehabilitation. At STEPS Prosthetics we find that orthotic provision, particularly if done early, can have a significant impact on the clinical outcomes of the clients we treat.

Often a small change to the positioning of a body part or walking pattern can make a tremendous difference to the speed of rehabilitation and return to normal activity.

Orthotic Assessment

At STEPS Prosthetics we will undertake a full assessment of your orthotic requirements, including discussing this with others who are part of your rehabilitation team, to ensure you are provided with the best orthotic options.

We believe that the user needs to be at the centre of the decision making and it is important that you understand how the suggested orthotic device(s) works and what they can do for you. There are often multiple options to suit different activities and we will take time to discuss these in detail.

Lower limb orthotics

At STEPS Prosthetics we specialise in treating neurological and traumatic injuries or impairments to the lower limb with advanced orthotic devices such as off-loading ankle braces, stance control knee joints and microprocessor-controlled devices.

We are experienced in working with world-leading products and advanced materials such as pre-preg carbon composites to design orthoses that are lightweight, durable and functional. Each device is completely bespoke to each client’s needs to optimise functional outcomes such as reducing pain and restoring mobility.

Off-loading orthosis

Designed for complex and painful ankle conditions typically following traumatic injuries, such as fractures or following salvage surgeries, joint fusions or as an alternative to elective amputation, by partially off-loading the foot and ankle, this orthosis can reduce pain and improve mobility.

Featuring carbon fibre struts to store and return energy, the off-loading orthosis can restore independence and pain-free walking through to high impact activities such as running.

Stance Control Devices

Designed to provide stability and control for clients with significant lower limb muscle weakness and instability due to neurological deficit. Stance control knee joints are incorporated into a KAFO (knee ankle foot orthosis) to stabilise the knee, preventing it from buckling on weight bearing in both standing and during the stance phase of walking and allowing the knee to bend for sitting and during the swing phase of walking.

We are experienced in working with electronic and microprocessor stance control joints from the world’s leading suppliers including Fior & Gentz and Ottobock. Combining these joints with our experience of working with carbon composite materials enables us to design advanced orthoses bespoke to each client’s individual needs to restore and improving mobility.

Upper Limb orthotics

Recent advances in upper limb orthotic design and manufacturing have resulted in high quality off-the-shelf products that are suitable for the majority of upper limb provision.

If an off-the-shelf device does not suit your particular needs we can provide custom made devices in a range of materials including thermoplastics, pre-preg composite/carbon fibre, leather and Lycra.
